The Mailman Who Changed My Life
It was my lifelong dream to study in America. A dream my dad once had before he suddenly passed away two days before my 13th birthday.
Read More →During my first week of college in America, our orientation included an icebreaker: stand in a circle and name something you'd bring through a door. Simple enough.
When my turn came, I confidently said, "shirt."
Except, in my Nigerian accent, it came out as "shet." We don't usually pronounce our "Rs" in a lot of words.
Laughter. Confused looks. Some people just stared.
I didn't understand the reaction at first, but then it hit that they hadn't heard shirt. They'd heard "sh*t."
I froze.
I wasn't trying to be funny. I wasn't trying to get a reaction. But suddenly, my voice — my natural voice — felt like a liability. And in that moment, I made a decision that stayed with me for years: I chose silence and muted myself.
One mispronounced word and I started second-guessing everything I said.
This is why I created Unmuted Moments. Because too many of us have had these moments — where we shrink, where we decide it's safer to hold back, where we trade authenticity for acceptance.
My show exists to help us recognize these moments and reclaim our voices — accent and all.
Because your voice — exactly as it is — deserves to be heard.
